Year 8 have just finished the first topic of study of this year all about disease and development. We didnt get round to having an end of module test this term so the test will be the first week back after half term, on the Monday for 8 and on the Thursday for 8 . Hopefully you wont get too stressed over revision during the holidays but if you do have an overwhelming urge to revise in order to get ahead of the opposition then these resources should help you on your way.
We started the term looking at how disease could spread and the historic growth of the Black Death. Cholera came next along with the reasons why it has yet to be eradicated in Developing countries. Zimbabwe was one area of focus as well as the possibility of an outbreak after a flood in South East Asia and what the Un representatives could do to help.
For the Millenium Development Goals these videos were very usefull.
We asked the question, What is development? and then looked at it from an economic, political, social and an environmental point of view. Hopefully this enabled you to appreciate just how complicated development can be.
The Millenium Development Goals were our next focus anf hopefully the World Bank website will enable you to clear up any problems with understanding what exactly they are that you may have.
It was then on to the Development pathway, the development gap and other issues of developmental problems before we finally moved on to whether or not Aid for LEDC´s is a good idea or just a patronising and colonial wast of time. Over 1 trillion dollars has been spent on Aid in Africa since the 1970´s and yet poverty on the continent has increased from 11% of the population to 66% of the population, so something must be going wrong somewhere, but what?
Hope I have given you something to think about for the tests on Monday and Thursday.
